Rewards: Points vs Cashback

Which card rewards you with what?

Lloyds Ultra pays cashback: 1% on everything in your first year, then 0.25% after that. It's simple - but the rate drops significantly once the honeymoon period ends. And there's a catch: your cashback is only paid once a year, in January. That means money you earned in February will land in your account nearly 12 months later.

Yonder works differently. Every £1 you spend earns 1 point - and up to 5 points per £1 at selected Experiences. Those points never expire, and you can use them on things you'd actually choose. Yonder’s curated dining rewards can be found in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Bath, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Glasgow, but there’s plenty to choose from if you live outside of those cities - including millions of hotels worldwide and online shopping brands galore.

Travel

At home in the world

Both cards charge no foreign transaction fees, so you can spend abroad on both without wincing at your statement. Yonder gives you up to £200/month in free cash withdrawals abroad, while Lloyds Ultra has no cash withdrawal fee, though interest applies immediately if you don't clear the balance.

Where Yonder pulls ahead: in-app trip summaries, the ability to convert points to Cathay Pacific Asia Miles, and in-app eSIM access to 120+ countries.

Fees & APR

Both cards are free. No monthly fee, no annual fee. Where they differ is on APR: Lloyds Ultra's representative rate is 12.9% with a 12.94% variable purchase rate - notably lower than Yonder's 31.6% and 31.60% variable purchase rate.

But, as with all credit cards, if you pay off your balance in full each month, you won’t pay any interest.

Verdict

If you want a set-it-and-forget-it card that feeds cashback back to your account annually, Lloyds Ultra does a solid job.

But if you want a free card that actually rewards you with experiences worth having - and builds towards travel, dining, and more - Yonder's Free Credit Card is the more rewarding choice from day one.
