48hrs in Barcelona; a Yonder city guide

Why Yonder is a great option as a debit or credit card for travelling abroad:

Gaudí gets the headlines. The beach gets the selfies. The tapas get the praise. Barcelona earns all of it. But the real magic sits in the in-between moments, the vermouth before dinner, the bakery you detour for twice, the bar you swear was empty five minutes ago.

This is a city that rewards wandering. Two days here should feel full, but never frantic. Eat well. Walk a lot. Trust your instincts. And leave room for a late night you did not plan. It also helps if earning a few extra points along the way feels effortless.

When to go

Late spring and early autumn are your sweet spots. May to June and September to October bring warm days, lighter crowds and a city that still feels lived-in rather than staged. Summer is fun, but busy. Winter is underrated if you like your vermouth taken indoors.

Day one: eat, walk, linger

Morning
Start gently. Barcelona mornings are not for rushing.

Caravelle, El Raval
A local favourite that quietly nails brunch without turning it into a spectacle. Great coffee, seasonal plates and a room that feels like everyone knows each other. Because they probably do.

Afterwards, wander through El Raval into the gothic quarter. Skip La Rambla itself and duck down the side streets instead. That is where the city softens.

Afternoon
Head towards el born. Pop into Santa Caterina market if you want colour and chaos without the tourist scrum of la boqueria. Snack as you go. There is no prize for sitting down yet.

Lunch at Tantarantana
Classic catalan cooking done properly. Nothing showy. Everything comforting. This is the kind of place locals return to when they want food that feels like home.

Walk it off along the waterfront, then cut back inland. If you want culture, pick one thing only. Picasso museum or MACBA. Barcelona does not reward box-ticking.

Evening
This is where the city really shows off.

Cañete, El Raval

Loud, busy, brilliant. Stand at the bar if you can. Order whatever the staff suggest. Leave happy and slightly louder than you arrived.

After dinner, you have two options.

Option one. Queue for Paradiso.

Yes, it is famous. Yes, it is worth it. The cocktails are playful, clever and very Barcelona. Go late, be patient, enjoy the theatre of it all.

Option two. Slip into a vermouth bar like Bar Electricitat or La Plata. No menus, no fuss. Just anchovies, olives and the feeling that you are exactly where you should be.

Day two: beach, bites, bottles

Morning
If the weather allows, start by the sea. Barceloneta early is a different city. Quieter, slower, locals only.

Grab a coffee and pastry near the beach, then walk north towards Poblenou. If you're in this area, we'd personally recommend Little Fern, the neighbourhood cafe and bakery. This neighbourhood feels more residential, more relaxed and far less polished. That's the point.

Lunch
Llamber, El Born
Creative tapas without the pretence. Small plates that feel thought-through but still generous. Ideal for sharing and ordering one more than you planned.

If you fancy something more casual, look out for Bar del Pla or Bodega La Puntual. Both excellent. Both reliably good.

Afternoon
Barcelona does drinking as well in the afternoon as it does at night.

El Nacional, Paseo de Gracia

A beautiful space that lets everyone eat what they want, when they want. Wander between counters. Order cava without thinking too hard about it. Stay longer than planned.

Walk it off up Paseo de Gracia. Even if you are not going inside, seeing Gaudí’s buildings in real life hits differently.

Evening
Finish high.

Hotel 1898 rooftop, La Isabela
One of the few rooftops that lives up to the hype. Come for sunset. Stay for the view. Leave when the crowd shifts.

If you still have energy, end the night somewhere small and unflashy. Sensi is a safe bet for a final round of modern tapas and a glass of something cold.

Seventy, Barcelona

Where to stay

If you are booking accommodation, this is one of the easiest ways to make your points go further before you have even landed.

Seventy Barcelona
Right in eixample and effortlessly comfortable. A great base if you want to dip in and out of neighbourhoods without overthinking it. The rooftop helps.

Be Mate Paseo de Gracia
Apartment-style living with hotel-level ease. Ideal if you want space, independence and a location that makes walking everywhere possible.

Hotel Arts Barcelona
For beach views, big rooms and a more polished stay. It is a little grand, but sometimes that is exactly what you want.

All of these, and more, are available on Yonder Hotels*. A very handy place to earn extra points before you have even ordered your first vermouth.

Local notes worth knowing

  • Eat late. Earlier than eight and you will feel early.
  • Walk everywhere. Barcelona is flatter than it looks.
  • Pay with Yonder*. No FX fees abroad. Your new favourite travel card.

Barcelona rewards confidence, curiosity and appetite. Two days is enough to fall for it. Just not enough to feel finished.

Places our people loved

Lo, Marketing: for my fellow veggies, I cannot recommend The Green Spot enough. The meal was elite, the atmosphere and the service were fantastic, and even my steak-loving partner said it was one of the best meals of the trip. We also stumbled across an amazing bistro-come-wine-bar, Bistrot Levante, and it was exceptional. Super cosy, full of locals, wine to write home about.

Harrison, Engineer: Cal Pep was recommended to me by my friend's Dad, who's a former chef. Two words: great tapas. I let the chef decide and had an incredible meal with some very nice wine indeed.

Hels, Partnerships: our other colleague, Kate, took us to Berbena. The tuna was so good, I almost cried. Craig also mentions it's "one of the best meals I’ve ever had. Pretty much everyone around the table agreed too."

Kate, Experiences: Cañete for the squid sandwich for me. This place is an institution in Barcelona, and therefore very hard to book a table for. Which is why you take a 3'oclock booking in the middle of the working day if it's all you can get. Anything to taste that squid sandwich.
